BERKELEY Public School emerged victorious from the inaugural Stewart Shield Primary Schools Invitational Rugby League Gala Day at Illawarra Sports High.
The shield was named after the NRL premiership winning brothers - Manly's Brett and Glenn Stewart - who both attended Illawarra Sports High.It is a round robin comp run by the school's Year 12 VET Sports Coaching students. The main focus of the day was developing skills, having fun and participating with students from other schools. Each team was assigned a number of Year 12 students, who acted as coaches, trainers and mentors. As well as a skills clinic before their first match, all players received constant feedback from the "coaching staff" throughout the competition.Head coach of the school's successful rugby league program, Brad Hughes, was ecstatic with the efforts of everyone who was involved. "The primary school kids were fantastic," Hughes said."They listened to the student coaches, were highly enthusiastic and most importantly, they played the game in the right spirit." Hughes was equally pleased with his year 12 students who displayed a "high level of responsibility from the warm up at the start of the day, right through until the final whistle sounded".
